05-26-2025 - 6:15 AM - Good Morning! It's Memorial Day Monday. I hear people wishing other people "Happy Memorial Day." I never thought of it as a "happy" day. Memorial Day honors the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. We got more rain last night. Our lakes are in good shape as we head into summer. I'me hearing some trucker chatter on CB Radio Channel 19 already. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
05-25-2025 - Our local Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® weather spotter group just gave a weather update on the 146.940 MHz repeater. Get a scanner radio, and you won't miss these updates!

05-25-2025 - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds a weekly informal net on Sundays at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. As far as I know, all licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Of course, scanner radio enthusiasts can also tune in.

05-25-2025 - It's 4:30 PM. The Texas Rangers squeaked out a win, Alex Palou won the Indy 500, and I'm listening to Ham Radio folks making contact with other Ham Radio folks scattered about state and federal parks across the USA in the Parks on the Air® program. I'll continue in the listening mode for a while.
05-25-2025 - It's a weekend, which means visitation at the James V. Allred Unit prison. Some people seem surprised when they hear that Allred houses around 3,700 offenders. It doesn't look that big when you drive by, but maybe you've seen the inside of a sardine can. Okay, they're not jammed in that tight, just efficiently. Tune in to Allred Unit operations at 153.815 MHz on your scanner.

05-25-2025 - Our local Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® weather spotters were active after midnight as storms rolled through town. I don't know if it was a formal activation or if a few spotters went out for a look. I was listening on my handheld radio in bed. They do a good job. Tune in to the spotters at 146.940 MHz on your scanner radio during severe weather.

05-25-2025 - Good Morning! It's Sunday and Indianapolis 500 Day if you like such events. I can take it or leave it when it comes to auto racing. They're fun to watch, but I don't go out of my way to watch them. I never watch the pre-race stuff, barely recognize some drivers, and don't care who wins. Speaking of wins, will the Texas Rangers continue their losing streak today? My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
05-24-2025 - In an episode of Better Call Saul (I don't think it was Breaking Bad), Mike Ehrmantraut uses a Galaxy CB Radio to call the local police to run a vehicle registration check. Two problems: It was a CB Radio, and police departments don't conduct business on the CB Radio band. Also, Mike had no antenna or coaxial cable connected to the CB Radio. Sadly, the movie people don't get technical advisors for situations like this, or they are so "in the dark" that they don't know they need technical advice.
05-24-2025 - Can split-frequency equal split-personality? Consider the case, actually several cases, where you think you know a person from chatting with them on local VHF frequencies, but find out later that they are a different person on 80 meters, or "75 phone" as some prefer. I've noticed this locally a few times over the years. I have no idea why they thought no one monitors the HF frequencies - especially 80 meters - especially at night and in the mornings. Just because some of us don't talk there doesn't mean we don't listen there.
05-24-2025 - At 2:30 PM, the CB Radio band is active with skip shooters shooting skip on channels 6, 11, 38, and others, and truckers trucking on channel 19. Several oversized loads have passed through town, working on channel 19.
