Former Hirschi High School Alumnus John Mullins - aka
Jon St. Elwood - aka Jazz Jackson on The Young & the Restless
I met John Mullins at Hirschi High School in the late 1960s. He wasn’t there when I started in 1966, nor when I graduated in 1970. I know he left to join the Job Corps sometime before I graduated. He lived a block from me, and we walked to school together a few times. We didn’t really hang out a lot.
Somewhere around 1980, I saw John on an episode of The White Shadow. I think he was a bouncer at a nightclub. The next time I saw him was on 48 Hrs. He said about three words, and that was it. Later, I saw him in Repo Man. Then, it was the “soap opera” The Young & the Restless, where he had a recurring role from 1983 to 1986. No, I don't watch soap operas. I heard he was there so I took a look.
It was either 1985 or 1986 when he came back to Wichita Falls, and if I remember correctly, he spoke at Hirschi High School. There was a story about it in the Times Record News, and I still have a copy of that. I stopped by his parents' house and John and I took a photo together. I still have that, too.
Around 2010, I wrote something about him crashing through a door at Hirschi on a blog I had. John was trying to run through the exit door at the end of the east wing of the building. His hand slipped off the crash bar, and he slammed into the door, opening it the hard way. He cracked the glass with his head. You could see the small scar on his head on TV. That cracked glass might still be there.
He found my story and emailed me. He said he was no longer acting and was a park ranger, patrolling on horseback. According to his Wikipedia page, he was born in California and passed away there in 2023. As for Wichita Falls, I guess he was just passing through.
